Can National Development Banks Help Alleviate the Shortage of Patient Investment Capital in Africa? Evidence from Bank-Level Panel Data

ABSTRACT National development banks remain an important part of modern financial systems in developed as well developing countries. They play role providing long-term financing and countercyclical during economic crises. In this context, article aims to provide empirical evidence the national Africa medium-term credit their performance managing resources, using bank-level data from selected countries BankFocus database (maintained by Fitch Bureau Van Dijk). The results show that while do not lend more relative commercial banks, they outperform latter focusing on loans, which is consistent with mandate. further confirm incur risk, resulting relatively higher nonperforming loan ratios. As expected, are profitable than general, but perform better when located systems. similar for public banks. suggests strengthening lending capacity would significantly help alleviate shortage patient investment capital; i.e., African economies. discusses policy implications proposes some avenues research.
